OPINION –Racism smacked Tiger Woods in the face, and it went viral. It all started between fellow golfer Sergio Garcia who made a comment that set off a fire storm.
Garcia, who later issued an apology, took issue with Woods for what he viewed as a breach of golf course etiquette during the third round of The Players Championship two weeks ago, was asked in jest at a European Tour function if he would be inviting Woods to dinner during next month’s U.S. Open.
“We’ll have him round every night,” Garcia said, according to multiple media reports. “We will serve fried chicken.”
When it comes down to racism, I rather someone tell me to my face that they are racist. Garcia was better off saying “We will serve the nigger fried chicken”. At least we would get the full impact and not the slickness that came out of Garcia’s mouth.
It appears Garcia can not let things go, but it seems more than ever not only is he a sore loser, but he is also a racist. Yes, Latinos can be racist, please do not get the fact that he is not white misconstrued – see George Zimmerman. The golf establishment boasted Garcia up to be Tiger’s rival, but how can Garcia be a rival when he can’t even beat the #1 golfer in the world. The real interesting thing is how Tiger Woods himself, felt about the comment.
Tiger tweeted this: “The comment that was made wasn’t silly. It was wrong, hurtful and clearly inappropriate.
“I’m confident that there is real regret that the remark was made.
“The Players ended nearly two weeks ago and it’s long past time to move on and talk about golf.”
I would love to ask Tiger, does he finally feel like a Black man? Tiger should have felt like a Black man when he was caught cheating, and the media had a field day at his expense. They could not wait to pounce on him and snickered at the fact that his game suffered thereafter. Tiger had to pay his ex-wife, who is white, a whole heap of his money. I never seen the mainstream media so focused on adultery in sports when so many athletes have cheated on their wives with little fan fare, but we all know why this athlete was given such air time.
This incident was a teachable moment, but of course Tiger would never partake in anything that will bring out a discussion on race, and specifically his blackness. All Tiger did was say how hurtful the comment was and hid like he always does when it comes to the color of his skin. Woods has made it known to Oprah in an interview in the late 90’s that he is not Black, but that he is ‘cablinasian’. I do not think Woods received the memo yet, after all these years in playing professional golf with his white peers. Woods is looked upon as a Black man, no matter how much Asian, and Caucasian he feels is in his DNA make-up. If he did not think he was a Black man then, he better realize it now because Garcia made sure to remind Tiger of his place – fried chicken style.
